Since it’s the time of spring cleaning, we figured we would put out an argument for including your garage in the process. While scrubbing your home from top to bottom after a long winter to freshen it up for spring makes sense, we assume that most people forget about the garage or intentionally don’t make efforts to clean it because it’s the place that’s allowed and meant to be dirty. But we would argue that by cleaning and organizing your garage, it will make it a much more functional and enjoyable space and you’ll feel so much better once it’s done!
So if your garage is piling up with random things and trash and recycling, follow this quick list to clear up that space and create a system to keep it organized all year long!
- First, take the time to go through all of the junk that is sitting in your garage and make piles. One pile for trash (things that are broken, expired, no longer needed but not worth donating), one pile for recycling, one pile for donating (maybe old clothes that your kids are never going to fit in again, old sports gear they don’t use anymore, books you won’t read again), and one pile for keeping. The trick is to be honest with yourself about why you are holding on to certain things and whether it will actually be used again.
- Once you’ve cleared up all that space, make sure you clean out your garage. Dust and sweep and even take some time to hose down the space and the floors, especially if you live somewhere that salts the roads during winter. You’ll want to clean out those chemicals sooner than later. You will instantly appreciate how much cleaner your garage feels and it will set a great new standard for the upcoming seasons.
- Get organized and invest in some proper storage for your garage. We recommend doing this with shelves and storage bins. It’s best to keep as much stuff off the ground as you can, not only for the safety and longevity of those products but also to maximize the space in your garage. You can even create storage space with ceiling mounts and storage at the roof of the garage or add hooks to free wall space to hang up bikes, toys, and tools. Then get yourself some durable storage bins and store similar things together for easy access in the future. Storage bins are a great way to keep your stuff clean, dry, out of reach from animals and bugs in your garage. Quick tip for you: store things you don’t need often at the top, like decorations and snow gear.
- In the process of cleaning, include an inspection of your garage door and the system in your process. Check out the tracks, rollers, springs, bolts, and hinges for any rust, damage, or loose parts. Clean out debris from the tracks and make sure to lubricate them properly. If anything seems out of place or damaged, call a professional immediately for an inspection!
